Home Maintenance Tips
Care & Maintenance of your wood floor (from Tarkett)
- Never use an oil soap type product on your prefinished hardwood floor. These can damage finish and void warranties. It is recommended to use only those care and cleaning products recommended by manufacturer of your particular floor.
- Do not damp-mop your floor. Water and wood do not mix. Again, use the products and procedures recommended by the maker of your floor.
- Never wax the urethane finish on a hardwood floor.
- Grit, gravel and dirt are enemies of a floor finish. Keep a proper doormat at all outside entrances and walk-off mat or area rug inside each entry to eliminate tracked-in dirt and grime.
- Vacuum your floor regularly. Do not use a beater bar head or attachments intended for carpet.
- Wipe up spills immediately before they spot with a damp cloth or paper towel.
- Furniture legs can permanently scratch or dent your hardwood floor. For furniture that sits directly on the floor, use commercially made felt protectors or furniture coasters under all table and chair legs.
- No matter how large or small your pet is, keep its nails trimmed. Pets with long nails can scratch and dull the floor finish. Also make sure your pets are house broken. Pet urine will leave a black stain that will not sand out.
Cleaning your windows (from Lincoln Windows)
- Clean the glass as soon as dirt and debris become apparent
- Start cleaning at the top of a particular wall or window and work your way down.
- A mild soap and water solution or a vinegar and water solution should be used with a soft cloth or sponge to remove dirt and debris
- Use a squeegee or clean soft cloth with clean water, to remove the cleaning solution
- With a separate cloth, wipe excess solution from the glass as well as the frame and surrounding materials.
Additional precautions and warnings:
- Do not use power washers or garden hoses to clean windows
- Do not use metal scrapers of any kind or allow metal parts of cleaning equipment to contact glass.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners on the glass surface
- Do not clean windows in direct sunlight
- Do not allow cleaning solutions to dry on glass or surrounding surfaces
Screen Cleaning Recommendations:
- To clean your screen of dust and light debris you may use the upholstery brush supplied with your vacuum cleaner.
- Heavier debris such as kitchen grease may be removed by gently scrubbing with mild soap and a soft brush.
- Screens should be rinsed to remove dirt and soap residue.
- Be sure that screens are dry before they are re-installed
